Each child comes into the world with a unique set of abilities and a beautiful personality ready to unfold. An important task for adults is to provide an environment that supports this most formative stage of development while also providing safe guidelines and limits. The Toddler Program, initiated by Dr. Maria Montessori in Italy in 1947, has been successful in helping parents provide an environment that fulfils the needs of the very young child. For the young child, learning comes from a natural interaction with the environment as well as from observing others. Because of this, Montessori education places a strong emphasis on the preparation of the environment so that the child’s developmental needs are met.
